Job Description
Responsibilities This position is responsible for the successful implementation and sustainability of two key veteran-focused initiatives under HHSC / Texas Veterans Commission (TVC):
- Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN)
- Veterans Financial Assistance Grant
This position provides direct peer support services and coordinates community-based support for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF), while also ensuring eligible veterans receive timely financial assistance through the TVC grant. The Coordinator will represent the organization at regional and state meetings and ensure all activities align with grant requirements, confidentiality standards, and best practices in military-informed care.
Responsibilities Include Military Veteran Peer Network
- Provide direct peer support services to SMVF, including one-on-one sessions and peer-led groups.
- Conduct community outreach and engagement activities to increase awareness and access.
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer MVPN peers.
- Establish trusted relationships based on shared lived experiences.
- Link SMVF with appropriate treatment, services, and military-informed providers.
- Represent the MVPN program at local coalitions, community events, and statewide network meetings.
- Maintain accurate documentation, activity logs, and peer service reports.
- Achieve and maintain MVPN certification within 12 months of hire.
TVC Veterans Financial Assistance Grant
- Serve as the alternative point of contact for the TVC grant initiative.
- Assist with conducting financial hardship screenings and determine eligibility based on grant guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of assistance.
- Assist to monitor, track, and report all grant-related data in accordance with funder requirements.
- Assist to submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to stakeholders timely and accurately as required.
- Educate applicants and community partners about program guidelines and application processes.
Completion of other duties as assigned by director as it relates to the program and position.
This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon continued availability of grant funding. Employment is not guaranteed beyond the grant period, and the position may be reduced or eliminated based on changes in funding.
Qualifications Education, Training and Experience (including licensure and certification)- Must have either 1) a High School Diploma; OR 2) a High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) issued in accordance with the law of the issuing state.
- Must be a Veteran or immediate family member of a Veteran.
- Must have at least one (1) year of experience working on one’s own recovery from traumatic brain injury, mental health, and/or substance use issues.
- Must be eligible and willing to obtain Certified Peer Specialist - MVPN credential within 12 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities - Interpersonal communication skills, active listening skills, time management skills, organization skills, team building skills, conflict resolution skills, record keeping skills, and presentation skill are essential for this position.
- Strong professional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to empathize with, relate to and effectively partner with individual and team members.
- Knowledge of mental health, substance use, and other issues affecting service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF) and recovery concepts.
- Knowledge of community resources and resources specific to SMVF.
- Must have a willingness to disclose lived experience, where appropriate, for the purpose of empowerment.
- Knowledge, experience, and proficiency in using standard Microsoft Office programs and systems databases.
- Conduct timely and accurate screenings of Veterans and SMVF individuals applying for financial assistance.
- Assess applicant eligibility based on specific grant requirements, financial documentation, service history and other relevant criteria
- Maintain organized records of all applicants including approvals, denials, and outcomes.
- Guarantee adherence to all funding requirements including application of grant procedures and monitoring usage of grant funds, caps, and ensuring funds are allocated appropriately within the budget.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
