Job Description
The City of Waynesboro is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. Current Tennessee POST-certified law enforcement officers are preferred, but non-certified applicants will be considered. Non-certified applicants must be willing to attend the academy and meet all the physical requirements to pass the police academy upon being hired. Non-certified applicants must sign a contract to be sent through the police academy .
Duties include:
- Enforces and obeys Tennessee State Laws and City of Waynesboro City Ordinances
- Patrol roadways within the city limits, monitoring and enforcing traffic infractions and criminal activity.
- Detain and arrests suspects
- Issue traffic citations when warranted
- Maintain constant attention to police communications via the police band radio.
- Respond to all types of calls for service in the City of Waynesboro
- Perform investigations of reported criminal acts
- Conduct security surveillance within the city limits, watching businesses, residences and personal property of the citizens of Waynesboro.
- Investigate and prepare crash reports for traffic crashes on roadways and public property within the city limits.
- Preserves crime scenes for investigators.
- Assist investigators with more detailed investigations
- Collects and processes evidence for submission to crime labs,
- Prepares and documents evidence for the submission to the crime lab for analysis.
- Prepare all necessary reports required to include but not limited to, warrants, incident reports, arrest reports, property reports, and tow vehicle reports.
- Provide security for government officials, employees, and visiting dignitaries.
- Provide information and directions to the public and visiting governmental officials.
- Establishes and maintains a variety of personal contacts with state officials, employees and general public.
- Testify in Waynesboro City Court, Wayne County General Sessions Court, Wayne County Circuit Court, and Wayne County Grand Jury cases.

The minimum annual salary is $45,838.00 with annual raises. We offer VERY competitively paid overtime through the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. New Hire and Re-entry retention bonuses of up to $10,000 are available for qualified candidates.
Minimum Qualifications are as follows:
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Be able to pass a thorough background investigation.
- Be prepared to pass a drug screen and physical.
- Be prepared to complete a P.O.S.T. Certified Training academy within six months from the hire date if not already certified. Out of state, certified applicants may attend the P.O.S.T. transition school.
- Non-certified applicants must be willing to sign a pre-employment contract to be sent through the police academy.
